ABOUT  BETTY  LU

I am a Chinese American that is passionate about helping students and clients find the path that nurtures and grows parts of the self that can enhance one’s experience of life to be more fulfilling and whole through the use of language.

I was born in China and spent my early years there before my family and I moved to America. I have a deep understanding of the Chinese culture and mindset; therefore, I am familiar with the challenges and difficulties that one could face when learning a new language or integrating into a new culture (acculturation).

I specialize in cross-cultural communication, which is the dialog or any kind of interaction (verbal and nonverbal) between people of different nationalities. Minor misunderstandings can lead to uncomfortable reminders of how small differences can cause big problems, which can make or break an interaction. As a world traveler, I often hear stories (and share personal stories) of the various ways in which communication went wrong – sometimes with painful results and other times very funny.

I also specialize in logic and critical thought, a more western approach to education as opposed to the eastern method of rote memorization. Critical thinking is a kind of thought in which you question, analyze, interpret, evaluate and make judgements about what you hear, say or write. Critical thought, when paired with language, has many practical uses that help one navigate life’s obstacles and promote improvement of one’s circumstances.

It is my goal to not just teach English that is one-dimensional but to actually assist in the assimilation of English into daily life in such a manner that is effective and practical.

It is my belief that learning a language though assimilation has impacts that go beyond communication itself. An overall improvement in one’s professional, social and private life is always noticeable and extremely rewarding.
